Spring Sports In Full Swing

The warmer weather has brought with it Spring sports season and Panthers baseball, girls soccer, boys tennis, track & field, and the introduction of boys volleyball to Metro!

Panthers baseball was first to get underway. While the team had some tough losses in their first week, they showed a lot of fight in an 11-12 loss to Principia and ended March by taking out some frustrations on STEAM, beating them 20-0! NEXT GAME: April 14 at 4:30 vs. Roosevelt on our home field at Matthews Dickey.

Metro’s track & field team got underway at the Lutheran North meet where both boys and girls teams took first place. A few highlights from the LuNo meet are Kenley Bohler taking first place while setting the school record in high jump; Tessa Link’s first place finish in the shot put (also 2nd in school history); and our Lucys taking first in the 800m (Luetkemeyer) and discus (Divis). T&F cleaned up at the DuBourg meet as well. Girls placed first, and the boys team placed second. Some phenomenal races were run at this meet, including Lina Ayulo’s perfectly run 1600m (in her debut, no less!) and the Roy-Rose sister throw down on the 400m relay. Kenley Bohler set another school record in the high jump! Panthers boys runners came up big as well: Gavin White (1st in 300m hurdles), Martin Galburt-Ruiz (2nd in 800m), Eli Murch (2nd in 3200m), Elai Hefer (2nd in his 200m debut), Tony Davis (2nd in 110m hurdles), Ben Phan (2nd in 400m), Kye Malone (3rd in 3200m) and Isaac Upchurch (3rd in 400m). These athletes are just a sampling of those who finished in the top 3, performed a personal best, and competed with heart. Track & Field meets are chock full of events and impossible to capture in a few sentences. NEXT MEET: PHL Relays, April 8 at 3pm on Gateway STEM’s field.

Girls Soccer kicked off their season against pesky rival Lutheran South who beat them 0-1 in last season’s opener. In a sign of great things to come, the Panthers got a little revenge dominating the Lancers 3-0. This team has tons of potential! NEXT GAME: April 7 at 5:00 at St. Pius X in Festus

Boys tennis also led off with a win against Lutheran South. This win wasn’t so easy. After doubles matches, the Panthers were down 0-3, but they battled back in their singles matches and pulled out a 5 to 4 victory! NEXT MATCH: University City Doubles Tourney on April 10 at 4:00.

Last but not least, boys volleyball is alive and well at Metro! Panthers volleyball has an undefeated record so far winning in decisive fashion against Gateway Science, McKinley, and Gateway STEM. Sophomores Cai Hilton and Hudson Holloway have been standout players, with freshman Lucian Bica coming up with big blocks when needed. NEXT GAME: April 7 at 4:30 at KIPP (Jefferson & Delmar).

Let’s go Panthers!!
